Traditionally, book pages were printed on large sheets of paper, which were then folded, stitched together and cut, and bound together. Most ordinary sized books were printed on both sides, eight pages to a sheet and then folded into eight. This was known as octavo size, from the Latin for eight. Larger book pages were printed with just four pages to a sheet and then folded into four. These books were called quarto size. So the Q originally stood for quarto, from the Latin for four, which were larger, or oversize, books. Thanks to Antony Deter of Morrison Schools for sharing this information
