Learning about the 15th and 19th amendments. Thank you Elizabeth Stanton and Susan B. Anthony for fighting for a woman's right to vote! The students in 2nd - 5th used this worksheet to help them identify Nonfiction Signposts taken from the book Reading Nonfiction Notice & Note Stances, Signposts, and Strategies by Kylene Beers and Roert E. Probst. . They read an article and highlighted the words in different colors for each signpost. There was a lot of discussion and debate about words and how and why the author selected them to make us think.
The big questions to ask is after reading nonfiction: "What does this make me wonder about?" Who should we add to Mt. Rushmore? All of the 2nd graders researched biographies of six important people in American History using PebbleGo. The six historical figures were: Squanto, Ben Franklin, Susan B. Anthony, Roberto Clemente, Ruby Bridges, and Neil Armstrong. They took notes, presented to their class, and then voted using a Google Form. The winner was Ben Franklin!
