We learned about child inventor, Louis Braille. Using just Six Dots, he invented an easy way for the blind to read and write. The book Six Dots by Jennifer Bryant includes the Braille alphabet, punctuation marks, and numbers. Using this guide, students wrote their names onto a template by filling in dots. To make this three dimensional, add a drop of glue and let it dry. Thank you to the Arlington Heights Memorial Library for providing braille books to our community. A great website to create a message and translate it into Braille is http://pbskids.org/arthur/print/braille/ Kindergarten and 1st Graders learned about authentic Multicultural Literature during their literacy lesson in the LMC. Students were given an assignment to find out how their family chose their name before the LMC lesson. After reading Thunder Boy Jr. by Sherman Alexie, the students shared their story. They have also been learning about Bold Text and Speech Bubbles, which are important text features of Thunder Boy Jr. To learn more about Sherman Alexie, read his interview with NPR by clicking on his name in the above paragraph. Families have shared with us how much they enjoyed this lesson. What is your story?
